About this life simulator
1 in 8 Billion is a free browser game about one life, drawn at random from the real statistics of 172 countries.
What it is
You are born at random as one of the babies being born now, and live that one life from age 0 to its end. The country, the family and the starting circumstances are drawn from public statistics. You make the choices that come up along the way.
The game covers 172 countries and territories. A full life takes about 30 to 90 minutes. It is written for ages 15 and up: death, illness, inequality and violence appear at real rates, without graphic detail.
Where the numbers come from
- Births, life expectancy and mortality: UN World Population Prospects 2024 and UN IGME.
- Income, inequality, schooling, urbanisation, internet and health spending: World Bank WDI, UNESCO UIS and WHO.
- Country metadata and names: World Bank country list, with localised names from Unicode CLDR.
The dataset in this build was generated on 24 Oct 2026. It covers 8,185,260,817 people and 134,147,481 annual births across the 172 published countries.
Method and limitations
Birth shares are calculated from annual births, not population. Mortality is modelled from each country's life expectancy and under-5 mortality rather than a full life table, so individual years are approximate. Income is shown in purchasing-power terms. Country values use the most recent non-empty year for each indicator, which differs by country.
This is a simulation, not a forecast. It cannot tell you what will happen to any real person, and it does not rank countries as good or bad places to be born.

This site is an independent edition. It is not affiliated with 1in8b.life, the original 1 in 8 Billion project, and it does not claim to be the official version. The data is public; the code, text and visual design here are our own.
Audio and narration
Narration is optional and off by default. It is generated ahead of time with ElevenLabs and served as static audio files; the site does not send your text or choices to a voice service at play time. Every spoken line also appears on screen. The narrator reads the life record, not the statistics: sources and numbers stay in text. Priority countries may add a short birth greeting in the local language. The inner-voice line at the end is omitted for deaths under 18.
